A historic moment when India reached the stars through courage, science, and international collaboration
On April 3, 1984, India etched its name into the history of space exploration when Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to travel into space. This remarkable achievement not only marked a proud moment for the nation but also showcased India’s growing presence in global scientific advancements.
Rakesh Sharma, a distinguished pilot of the Indian Air Force, was selected as part of a joint space mission between India and the Soviet Union under the Intercosmos program. He flew aboard the spacecraft Soyuz T-11, launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
During the mission, Sharma spent nearly eight days in space aboard the Salyut 7 space station. He conducted various scientific and technical experiments, including studies on the effects of microgravity on the human body and remote sensing of India from space. His work contributed valuable data for both Indian and Soviet space research programs.
One of the most iconic moments of the mission came during a live conversation with then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. When asked how India looked from space, Sharma famously replied, “Saare Jahan Se Achha,” a phrase that continues to inspire millions of Indians even today.
This mission was more than just a personal milestone—it symbolized India’s ambition and potential in the field of space exploration. It laid the foundation for future advancements led by organizations like ISRO, which has since achieved global recognition through missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Rakesh Sharma was later honored with the prestigious Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, recognizing his bravery and contribution to the nation.
